Obituary

Daniel J. “Bear” Rivera, age 76, was a man who was loved deeply by his family and by all those fortunate enough to call him a friend. Known simply as “Bear,” he had a way of making his presence known, and behind that name was a big heart and an even bigger love for the people in his life.

Bear was the loving husband of the late Georgann(née Deal) and a devoted stepfather to Judy (Tim) and the late Dennis “Skipper.” He was especially proud of his role as Papa Bear, and his great-grandchildren brought him a special kind of joy. His family was at the center of his life, and he leaves behind many memories that will continue to be shared for generations.

Bear was one of a large and loving family. He was preceded in death by his siblings Paul, Skitch, and LuLu. He is survived by his siblings Christine, Rudy (Lola), Theresa (René), Albert (Barb), Gary, and Lisa, as well as many nieces and nephews who affectionately knew him as “Uncle Bear.”

He was the godfather of Angelena Bee Gonzalez and the beloved son of the late Guadalupe and Lupe Rivera.

Those who knew Bear will remember more than the names and relationships that made up his family. They will remember Bear himself—the husband, stepfather, Papa, brother, uncle, godfather, and friend who became part of the lives of so many people. His memory will live on in the stories told, the laughter shared, a drink raised, and the love he gave to the people who mattered most to him.

Bear wished for no services, and his family will honor those wishes. In the days ahead, may those who loved Bear remember him in their own way and carry a little piece of “Papa Bear” and “Uncle Bear” with them wherever life takes them.
